Everything you need to know about the camp

Overview

  • The Gura River Camp is a family campground on the largest river of the Aberdares.

  • The campground has spaces to put up tents or park cars with rooftop tents. We currently don’t rent out any gear.

  • There are simple facilities consisting of

    • Compost toilets

    • Simple hot showers

    • Kitchen banda (only sink with tap, picnic bench with table and countertop currently; no cookers, cutlery or other equipment yet)

  • Currently we DON’T have power on site and very limited lighting. So please bring charging devices and lamps.

  • We have Wifi at the reception but it’s only meant for important communication. Please talk to

  • Our tap runs water from the river which is very clean but it is not filtered. We recommend you bring a filter or drinking water from Nairobi.

What to do

  • The campground is in the forest reserve managed by Kenya Forest Service, just outside the Aberdares National Park fence. That means there are no wild animals to be concerned about.

  • Visitors can enjoy hiking (with or without a guide) & mountain biking on the many trails in the area (dogs can come on the trails as well), swimming in the river, BBQing, hiking up into the national park with a ranger. Or just chill and read a book :)

  • You can also fish for trout. However, the trout population around the campsite area is currently very low. We will address that soon by stocking the river). In the meantime the only way to fish is hiking up 4km into the national park with a ranger. Please make sure to bring your own gear.

  • The camp sites are located right on the banks of the river overlooking the beautiful native forest.
